Heavy shelling by us all morning. In the afternoon, about 2 PM, we open a heavy bombardment on enemy, a great sight. In the morning our aeroplanes bring down two enemy aeroplanes – good work.
We send over smoke shells on our front as a feint attack, & attack in another quarter altogether.
We shelled enemy heavily all day. Sergt Michaud of No 4 Co PPCLI was killed on 17th by sniper, shot thro’ head. Snow in afternoon followed by frost.
Over to Engineers re draughting board & blue prints. About 1:30 PM the enemy shell our dugouts. One shell passes over mine, & smashes the one in front to pieces. In all about 50 shells are put in. They shell the Cross roads, & also the Arras-Bethune Rd to a nicety, dropping them right in the center of road. A new shell is used with a sulphuric nose cap additional & shrapnel bullets embedded in a sulphuric paste.
At night we blow up two mines (1:30 am) & occupy the [cops?]. Few casualties.
Brigade S.M. & I go up to front lines. Later in day enemy gives us some heavy shelling. The Canadian order is ‘give the Huns no rest & peace’- and we don’t.
Rumours of French capturing 6,700 Germans at Verdun area, it is confirmed later. They advance on a 6 mile front for 2 miles. Capture 75 guns & destroy 200. Enemy capture Buzau in Romania.
Mr Henry, Intell. Officer wounded in head. Son of a mayor of Edmonton & great friend of mine. Jack Baxter goes to Hospital.
Enemy threaten to use horrible methods if we don’t accept their peace terms “dropping germ bombs on London, Paris, etc. & also an increase in “U” boat campaign. Our dugout is severely shelled.
Two men of 49th are captured by enemy on their post. They were chloroformed & carried away.
