Friday 24 December 1915

December 24, 2015 by Sarah McLennan

Rained frightfully all night but ceased in morning till boys went digging then it poured.
No. 3 and 4 companies shift their billets. No. 4 Company go to Mont Noir and take over [huts] where there is lots of mud and plenty of rats. A windmill still in action is above us on top of the hill. We receive Christmas presents – packet or box of cigarettes and tobacco from “friends in Montreal”, a book and packet of Player Cigarettes from “Canadian Field Comforts Commission” of Moore Barracks Shorncliffe, a field service writing pad from Major Gault’s Mother a Christmas pudding. I walk into La Clytte with Wallach. The Huns are busy with their blue lights. Plenty of rats run around us at night.

*Canadian Field Comforts Commission- A Canadian government agency whose aim was the distribution of extra clothing and comforts to Canadian soldiers in England and the front. The commission sent goods such as clothes, food, hygiene products and tobacco directly to soldiers.

Tuesday 19 October 1915

Appointed Regimental Barber together with Private Williams.
Weather very cold.
Heavy bombardment in Arras region. Private Wallach pays a visit to Estaminets for coffee. We are not able to do any washing so in consequence are lousy.

*Arras – A city in northern France very close to the front lines for most of the war. There was a series of battles fought over Arras during the war which saw the city change hands. The New Zealand Tunneling company helped use a series of medieval tunnels beneath the city to defend it from the Germans. The city was damaged so severely during the war that three quarters of it had to be rebuilt.

Church Parade at 10:15 am. Afternoon Wallach, Brozem, Driscoll and self went to Erquinghem, Armentiéres and Nieppe. Had a repast in Armentiéres consisting of Frittes, eggs, olive oil and cafe au lait. Our hostess surprised Englishman not drinking coffee, as one of our fellows refused. Came to a café in Armentiéres where the rank and file are not allowed to buy nor eat there. ‘Twas entirely reserved for officers! I experience great difficulty in getting Lifebouy or any disinfectant soap.
