Saturday 20 May 1916
Am called to Brigade Headqr to make plans of front line which take over. Brigade Topographer.
Their draughtsman sent to hospital.

Thursday 18 May 1916 – fair
Enemy drop bomb on our camp. He gets a very warm reception from our antiaircraft & aeroplanes.
Wednesday 17 May 1916 – fine
Enemy aeroplane passes our camp dropping 3 bombs at 4 am.
Sketching in Morning.
Enemy aeroplane drops 2 bombs near our camp. Terrific explosion but no damage done – except to the field.
Our Battn beats the guards in football.
Our Regt is drilled by guards instructor. Some gruelling.
Tuesday 16 May 1916
Our machine guns & anti-aircraft guns ward off enemy aeroplanes that had dropped bombs on Poperinghe. One of our machines is sent down with pilot killed & observer wounded or vice versa.
Wallach visits me.
Monday 15 May 1916 – rain
To firing line at 10 am.
Meet Colonel Buller and give him panorama sketch of trenches.
In firing line & make sketch of “Bird Cage” & enemy trenches etc.
Enemy shells dugout & trenches heavily, we reply with 5 times the amount. Snipers busy.
Sunday 14 May 1916
Left Ouderdom for trenches in afternoon. Have very bad cold & lose speech during evening. Call at Zillebeke & leave part of my trappings there. Go to trench 61, bay 2 & make panorama sketches of German trenches & lines.
The sketch takes one & half hours & all time exposed to enemy snipers.
Enemy throwing over very big shells in Sanctuary Wood. Two of No 4 Co badly hit with enemy shell, trenches firing with heavy stuff. I go along C.M.R. trenches & am stopped many times for “Spying.”
