Looking over my goods & chattels. Harry does photographic work. I take cycle trip to Kirkdale in afternoon. 1,200 troops awaiting embarkation for Canada. Call @ William’s on way back. In evening to Upton’s & say goodbye to all. Home @ 12 midnight.

Monday 9 September 1918

Up @ 8.30 am. Had breakfast with Mrs. Miller. At 9.30 in the auto with Doctor Miller & Mr. Arthur Millar. Call at Staff. Archeological Socy. & pay my subscription for 1919. Say goodbye to Mrs. & Gwendoline Flamank, then on to Rushton’s & ditto. Hurried home in car, a hasty meal & to Stn. by car with Dr. M. & Arthur, say final goodbye. Board the 1.24 for L’pool. Arr. L’pool 4.20 [circa].

Could not get car so walk part of way

Up @ 9.45. Breakfast at 10 am. Chatting till 2 pm. Dinner 2 pm. Take walk to station to see times of trains. Tea @ 6 pm. Miss Stevens calls. Chat till 8.30. Miss S. leaves. Have interesting tete a tete with Mrs. Miller, Dr. M. & Arthur M. Supper @ 10 pm. Retire @ 12.30 am.

–– thunder & lightning in pm

Had breakfast in bed brought in by Kittie & Lilian. Leave West Hallam @ 2 pm for Derby. Went to Mid. Stn. re my overcoat –– no news! Had tea at Boots. To Northern Stn. & took train for Stafford @ 4.55 pm. Kissed goodbye to Kittie & Lily. Arr. Stafford 6.30 pm. Call on Doctor Miller, out hunting. They return @ 7 pm. The hunting party are Dr. M, Arthur M. (Excise Officer), Mr. [C…… .] & Mr. [Lo…… ..], Mrs. & Miss {…… …… ..]. All have tea together. We return @ 12.pm.

Friday 6 September 1918 –– fine, later rain

Left Derby by G.N. @ 8.25 am. Charles leaves for Chrich at 7.50 am. He ought to have reported at Chrish last night. Arr. West Hallam @ 9 am. Walked to Mapperley. Kittie at school. Lily at home. Lily & I go to Ilkeston, have dinner. Visit Arts & Craft Exhibition. At 1.34 we go to Nottingham & visit castle, return to Ilkeston at 4.15 pm & walk home to Mapperley. We three play Rummy. Bed at 12.30 am.

Up @ 7 am. Leave [Flowers] @ 8.30 am. Call @ 2 College St. & @ shop to say goodbye. Given fruit by the girls. Leave Leicester @ 11.10 am, change at Trent Junction. Pick up wrong overcoat. Wire thru to search train to Chesterfield & Stations to Glasgow. Arr. Derby @ 12.20. Charles meets me on platform. To Aunt Alice [MacK…… .] & have pleasant time. Aunt, Charles & I go to theatre. To bed at 12.30.

–– heavy rain all day

Up at 8.30 am & breakfast with Mrs. Sydney Chamberlain. To shop at 9 am & help with funeral arrangements.

(…… .Aunt gone to Great Glen for rest yesterday).

Girls highly pleased by my offer of assistance.

In afternoon I take Ada Southern to Rothly. Have splendid time with Miss Draycot, young Milly & Dick. Return Leicester @ 7.20 pm to visit Mrs. [Flowers] & stay night there. To bed @ 2 am.

Up at 5.30 am. Sister Gerard prepares breakfast for Nield, Lovejoy & myself. We leave Orpington at 7.15 and arr. Charing Cross 8.15. Leave St. Pancras at 8.50 arr Leicester 11.10 am. Call at Aunt’’ s. Have dinner. Go to see Ada Southern @ 3.30 pm. We go for walk to Belgrave, Birstall & Wanlip & return at 9.30 to Post Office where she works nights. Visit cousins who work all night on floral decorations for Sir Herbert Marshall. I sleep @ Aunt’’ s 2 College St.

*Sir Herbert Marshall served as Mayor of Leicester in 1896. He died on August 31, 1918. The cousins were likely preparing floral decorations for his funeral.
