Up @ 7 am. Leave [Flowers] @ 8.30 am. Call @ 2 College St. & @ shop to say goodbye. Given fruit by the girls. Leave Leicester @ 11.10 am, change at Trent Junction. Pick up wrong overcoat. Wire thru to search train to Chesterfield & Stations to Glasgow. Arr. Derby @ 12.20. Charles meets me on platform. To Aunt Alice [MacK…… .] & have pleasant time. Aunt, Charles & I go to theatre. To bed at 12.30.

Left Ramsgate 10 am arr London 12.3. noon. Had dinner @ YMCA.  Went by 1.45 pm train for Kettering & 5:15 for Leicester arr Leicester @ 6.5.  Stayed @ Aunts.  Meet Fred who is in Khaki.  Gone away @ 8:50 for Beckingham.

Left L’Pool 5:20 with Harry. Gertie & Mack see me off.
Arr 6:47 to Smiths. In Morning to Wm. Salt Library. Miss Bradlivy wants me to write her.
To Doctor @ 10:30 am, Good-bye Harry. Mr Smith & Eileen see me off for Leicester at 11:26 train with Harry who accompanies me. Arr Haverton, 12:30 train for Leicester @ 1:15 PM.

Sunday 5 March 1916 – frost

Frost. Up at 9 am for a walk along river. Send telegram to Leicester. Leave Stafford at 2 PM for Leicester. Tony, Betty and Eileen see me off. Arr. Leicester at 4:30 go to aunts & stay night. Visit Miss Kidd & John Draycot. A zeppelin raid is taking place at 7 PM. All lights are put out but nothing happens.


German Airship Raids – On the evening of the March 5th into the morning of the 6th Germans sent 3 Zeppelins to bomb Rosyth, however high winds forced them instead to bomb Hull. The attack resulted in 18 deaths and 52 injuries with £25,000 worth of damage.

At 2:30 am dress for departure. Await transport in Locre. Leave Locre 4:40 AM, arrive Bailleul 5:15, leave 5:30 AM, arr. Boulogne 10:15 am, leave Boulogne 12:15, arr. Folkestone, 1:30 PM, depart. Folkestone 2 PM, arr. Victoria [station] 5 PM, leave St Pancras [station] 6, arr. Leicester 7:55 go to aunt Louise & stay night.
