Saturday 3 October 1914 – Lynn Valley Day – fine

To work ½ day at Keith Road Schools. Home at 1 pm. I go to Lynn Valley Day sports
To Haswell’s & take Mrs Graham to Vancouver at 6 pm.
We go to Rex & Columbia Theatres & home at 11:30 pm
I get to bed at 12 midnight

Thursday 1 October 1914 – rain

Raining all day
Worked 1 ½ hours.
To Vancouver at 11:30 am to cash pension cheque 38.85.
Paid Barker $4.00
Paid Clarke $6.29

To Rex Theatre 2:30 pm. Home 4:30 pm.
In evening – to Reverend N.J. Thompson’s Residence. Met Reverend & Mrs Hugh Hooper of St. John’s Rectory, North Vancouver. Had chat & left at 10:30 pm. Received invitation to Hooper’s.

German warship – Leipzig – sinks British steamer Banksfields which had a cargo of sugar value $500,000


*SMS Leipzig – A Bremen Class German cruiser named after the city of Leipizig. The ship spent much of the early part of WWI along the coast of Mexico and South America attacking British merchant ships. SMS Leipzig took part in 2 naval battles, the Battle of Coronel and the Battle of the Falkland Islands before being chased down and sunk by the British cruisers HMS Glasgow and HMS Kent.

Saturday 22 August 1914 – fine

To work on Keith Road School in morning. In afternoon I to Vancouver & met Hugh Neill at the Ferry Wharf. “We go to the C.P.R. Depot & see the 72nd Highland Regiment off to the war. (via Valcartier, Quebec) They left at 3:30 pm.” To Quirt’s & chat awhile. I leave Hugh at 5:30 pm & go to Theobald’s, where I have late dinner. Afterwards to Quirt’s (7:30 pm). Myrtle is not at home. I say good-bye to Mrs. & children & leave for Rex Theatre. Home to Lynn Valley at 10 pm.


*The 72nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, were part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during WWI. They were mobilized out of Vancouver, and fought in France and Flanders though the entirety of WWI.

Saturday 25 July 1914 – Rain till noon

Raining in morning.

Then time Charles & me go to Vancouver at 10 am. I call at Municipal Hall & draw $7.50 for wages from work on Keith Road School. To Rex & Columbia Theatre at 2 & 3 pm. Call at Fashion Crafts & get trousers altered. Also call at Quirt & run up to Theobald’s for tea. Home again at 10:45 pm after making purchases of books etc.

Friday 3 July 1914 – very hot

Right Honorable Joseph Chamberlain is dead.

Working on Vestry till 11:30 pm then home & to Haswell’s for Mrs. Graham. Leave at 12:40 for Vancouver. I cash my pension cheque $38.85. Then on to Granville St. & Hastings St. to make purchases with Mrs. Graham. Met Misses Minnie & Ferne Quirt. To Rex Theatre till 5:30. To White Lunch & had supper. Home to Haswell’s at 6:45 pm. Had supper at Haswell’s. Back to my house at 9 pm. Stayed till 9:45 pm. Then to Haswell’s. Mrs. Graham leaves for the Prince Albert boat at 10:30 pm in company of Mrs. & Mr. Haswell, Mr. Little and myself. Say goodbye & back home at 12:30 midnight.


*Joseph Chamberlain – A British politician with the Liberal Party and father of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.

Wednesday 1 July 1914 – Dominion Day (hot day)

I work up till 11:30 am. Then home, had dinner & to see Mrs. Graham at 1 pm. We leave for Vancouver at 1:30 pm. To Rex Theatre and afterwards to Stanley Park where we met Mrs. Fetherstonhaugh & her daughter. I take photos of them in the park. Had a walk with them to Coal Harbor where they take car. Mrs. Graham & I walk into town. Had supper at White Lunch, then on to boat. Had fine view of fireworks North Vancouver. Home to Haswell’s at 10 pm.


*Dominion Day –A public Holiday to commemorate the granting of national status to Canada. It was renamed “Canada Day” in 1982.
