Friday 16th April 1915 – fine

Packing up ready to go to Shorncliffe to rejoin my regiment. I leave Portsmouth Harbour at 12:05 noon. Arrive at Waterloo at 2:25. Left [G.E. and C. Ry] at 3:30 and arrive at Shorncliffe at 4:50. Walked two miles to Barracks. Had no sleep at night. Lots of talk and a fight. Sent postcards to Ernest.

Thursday 15 April 1915 – fine

Ernest and I have walk around Alverstoke and Gosport in morning and in afternoon to Portsmouth.
Airship visits Tyne but does little damage. Three of Princess Pat’s Officers get Distinguished Service Order.


 

*Air Raid in Tyneside – On April 14 and 15th 1915 the German Navy attempted to raid Tyneside but the bombing was rendered, for the most part, ineffective due to inclement weather. These failed attempts led the Germans to wait until the new P-class Zeppelin was available to continue bombing raids of England

Writing letters.
Ernest and I take a walk thro’ Southsea and Portsmouth from 10 am till 12:45.
Writing in afternoon in answer to letters received. Letter from Fern Quirt.

Tuesday 13 April 1915 – fine

Up at 8 am. Said goodbye to Cyril at 9 am. He leaves for Newcastle. I dig garden till 10:30 am. Leave Ede and said goodbye at 10:55. Took train for Wolverhampton at 11:20. Left Wolverhampton at 12:15 for Gosport. Arrive in Gosport at 5:15. Half an hour later found the [mater] still ill and lots of letters and newspapers.

Monday 12 April 1915 – fine

Said goodbyes all round and left at 10 am for Sileby on Harry Knights bicycle. Arrived at Sileby at 10:10 and left bike at Loom’s. Called at Yates and said goodbye to the girls and Hilda. Left Sileby by 10:50 for Leicester. Called on Draycots my aunt and cousin. Met Mrs Chamberlain and Mr Chamberlain at Draycots. Left Leicester at 11:45 for Stafford and arrived at 1:30 pm. Met Ede at home and had lunch. Cyril home at 6 pm. Played cards till 10:45. To bed at 11:30 pm.

Sunday 11 April 1915 – fine

Left Seagrave for Rothley to say goodbye to Draycots. Arrive at Rothley at 11:30. Met William and Richard. Walked over the farm and returned for dinner with William and wife. Called at the girls and had tea with them. Left Rothley at 5 pm. Arrived in Sileby at 5:30. Called at Loom’s and Inglesant’s. Arrived in Seagrave at 5:50 pm. To P.M. church at 6:20 pm with Maud. After Church called on Davenports, Gert’s, Lynn’s, and Ede and Ada Draycot.

Saturday 10 April 1915 – fine

I leave Seagrave by pony and trap for Rearsby. Catch 8:35 am train for Melton. Call at Sexton’s house. Parish Church Mr Middleton the curate is there and I find he has been to Fort William. Go to Church and get registers then to the Manor House, look thro’ them with Mr Reverend S.D Middleton. I lunch with Mr Sergeant, Mrs Bach, etc. Then tea at 5:30. Take 6:22 train for Rearsby.

To Sileby and brought wreath from station. Mr Draycot’s funeral 3:30 pm (aet. 83 years). Offer from Canon Blakenby of Melton Mowbray to search the parish registers. Stayed at Gert’s from 6 to 8:45 pm.

Thursday 8 April 1915 – fine and showery

Wrote letters in morning to Cyril and Ede, Ernest Draycot.
In afternoon to Leicester via Rearsby (to which place I walked from Seagrave). Ordered wreath from Aunt’s. Had tea with Aunt Louise and Fred. Had another tea at Loom’s in Sileby.

Wednesday 7 April 1915 – fine

Left Seagrave at 9:20 am. Missed train for Leicester. Called at Inglesant. Caught train at 10:57 am. Went to No. 5 Military Hospital at Leicester and get an extension for a fortnight and some medicine. Took 12:40 train for Stafford (Great Northern Railway) and searched Registers there. On to Melton Mowbray, saw the Sexton regarding registers. Left for Rearsby at 6:12. Walked from Rearsby to Seagrave . Arrived at 8 pm.

*Sexton – A municipal official charged with overseeing the community’s graveyard. This includes maintaining burial records.
